BWT Innovation: What the Company Introduced First and What Actually Works

A review of BWT's key developments: Mg2+, AQA total, SEPTRON, FUMATECH membranes, One Pipe Power. What is verifiable and what is a company claim.

BWT has a long line of developments, and the company calls some of them world premieres. Below is a point-by-point review: what is known from official materials, how each technology works physically, and where a company claim needs to be separated from a verifiable fact.

Where the Company Came From

BWT's roots go back to the chemical factory of Johann Adam Benckiser, founded in 1823 in Pforzheim. The modern company begins in 1990, when Andreas Weissenbacher carried out a buyout of the Benckiser Wasser Technik division. In 1992 the headquarters moved to Mondsee (Austria). In 2020 BWT Aktiengesellschaft was converted into BWT Holding GmbH.

According to BWT's own data, the group has more than 6500 employees, 13 production sites, and partners in more than 120 countries. The company delisted from the stock exchange in 2017, so all figures after 2016 are self-disclosed.

SEPTRON and Electrodeionization (1994)

BWT dates the SEPTRON technology, electrodeionization (EDI), to 1994. The physics is straightforward. Water after reverse osmosis passes through chambers containing ion exchange resin and membranes, while direct current continuously carries ions away into the concentrate. The resin is regenerated by the electric field rather than by acid and caustic.

What works in practice: EDI has indeed displaced chemical regeneration at sites that need high-purity water, such as pharmaceuticals, electronics, and power generation. This is not marketing; it is now a standard stage in a demineralized water treatment scheme. At the same time, EDI is sensitive to feed water quality: with high dissolved solids or free chlorine at the inlet, the module degrades quickly.

AQA total and Chemical-Free Scale Protection (1997)

BWT dates AQA total to 1997 and describes the principle as the formation of lime nanocrystals under pulses of current and voltage. The dissolved hardness salts are not removed but converted into a form that adheres less strongly to walls and heat exchange surfaces.

According to BWT data for the residential version, AQA nano: energy consumption of 0.018 kWh per cubic meter, standby consumption of 1.8 W, flow of up to 25 liters per minute, and an electrode service life of about 110 cubic meters.

What an engineer needs to understand here: chemical-free protection does not reduce hardness. A water analysis after such a unit will show the same milliequivalents. It works as a means of reducing scale formation, not as softening. Where the process specifically requires soft water, such as steam boilers and industrial steam generators, ion exchange softening remains mandatory.

Magnesium Mineralization Mg2+ (2011)

BWT dates the magnesium mineralization technology to 2011. The company calls it patented. The scheme is multistage: removal of calcium, particulates, chlorine, and substances affecting taste and odor, followed by magnesium dosing.

Taste-related wording ("a fuller aroma of tea and coffee") and statements about the effect of magnesium on the cardiovascular system, muscles, and sleep are company claims. They should be cited with the attribution "according to BWT's wording."

What is actually verifiable and useful: replacing calcium hardness with magnesium reduces scale in the kettle and coffee machine, and the taste profile of the water changes as a result. For professional coffee brewing, controlled mineralization is a working tool, and the BWT water+more division is built around exactly this task.

FUMATECH BWT Membranes

FUMATECH BWT manufactures ion exchange membranes. According to the company, its experience in producing membranes and membrane processes exceeds 25 years, and the applications include water treatment, proton exchange membrane (PEM) fuel cells, batteries, and water electrolysis.

This segment is the most interesting from an engineering standpoint. The PEM is the component that determines both the efficiency and the service life of a fuel cell. A company that started with ion exchange resins for water ended up in the hydrogen chain through the very same ion exchange chemistry. This is not a marketing move but a logical extension of its technology base.

One Pipe Power Pearlwater (2025)

In March 2025, BWT announced One Pipe Power Pearlwater and called it a world premiere. The essence of the solution: a PerlaMAXX or Rondomat duoMAXX softener at the building inlet reduces hardness below 4 °dH, and a Pearlwater Mineralizer unit under the sink returns calcium, magnesium, silicates, and bicarbonates at the drinking point.

The idea has a practical point. Normally two pipes have to be run: soft water for appliances and unsoftened water for drinking. Here there is one pipe, and the separation is moved to the point of use. The claim of reducing CO2 emissions by up to 80 percent by replacing bottled water is the company's own calculation.

What matters for a customer in Uzbekistan

  • Separate the tasks. Softening solves the problem of scale in the boiler and water heater. Mineralization solves the problem of taste in the kitchen. One device rarely handles both tasks correctly.
  • Chemical-free AQA systems do not replace a softener where feed water hardness is regulated. For steam boilers and industrial heat exchangers, specify ion exchange.
  • Before choosing any of these technologies, run a water analysis for hardness, dry residue, iron, and chlorides. In Tashkent the values vary by district, and the scheme is selected for the specific inlet.
  • Calculate the five-year cost of ownership: salt, cartridges, electrode, service. On this measure, solutions of different classes often swap places.
